Kerrs take fifth place in Turin
Britain's Sinead and John Kerr claimed fifth place in the World Figure Skating Ice Dance Championships as Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won gold.

The Kerr siblings from Scotland began by taking sixth place in the Compulsory Dance and were fifth in the Original Dance and the Free Dance in Turin.

Canada's Olympic champions won their first world title, taking both opening disciplines and second in the Free.

In the women's short programme, Olympic champion Kim Yuna was only seventh.

The South Korean, who won gold with a record score in Vancouver last month, blamed a foot problem after finishing with 60.30 points.

The defending champion could struggle to make the podium after Saturday's free programme with her big rival, Japan's Mao Asada, second behind American Mirai Nagasu and Finland's Laura Lepisto in third.

Britain's Jenna McCorkell was 15th following Friday's short programme.

Virtue and Moir had been in control of the dance event after the Compulsory Golden Waltz on Tuesday and a flashy Flamenco in the Original on Thursday.

They made an error in one of their twizzles on Friday but that could not stop them from wrapping up the top prize.

Ice Skating: Career best from Kerrs

Published Date: 27 March 2010
MURRAYFIELD'S John and Sinead Kerr finished a career-best fifth at the World Figure Skating Championships in Turin last night.
In what could be their farewell competition, the brother and sister pairing were fifth after Thursday's Original Dance and maintained their position in last night's Free Dance with a score of 93.32 points. That left them with their highest-ever total of 189.11 and saw them better last year's seventh place finish in Los Angeles.
